Because organization is a key component to our self care routine.
They say that comparison is the thief of joy. We’d like to officially nominate clutter for that title as well because a pile of loose bills doesn’t exactly inspire serenity. If you can’t relax until the toys are stowed away and the bathroom linens have found a neat home on the shelf, we get it. And so do Stefani Herr and Alexa Cohn of SortJoy, the company creating sustainable and beautiful home organization tools. Lucky for all of us, SortJoy helps us to release our shoulders from our ears so that we can be at ease in our spaces.
Sustainably produced functional organization bins just became a key component to our self care routine. Created and designed by a professional organizer (Herr) and an interior designer (Cohn), we can trust that what we’re bringing into our space won’t create more mess or throw off our aesthetic. Best-sellers, the Small Flex Bin and the Sculpted Bin, are selling out for good reason: they’re machine-washable bins and versatile, spiffing up drawers, counters, and shelves. We spoke with Stefani Herr and Alexa Cohn on organization as self care, what they’re gifting this holiday season, and what co-op products they love to bring balance to the mental and physical clutter of daily life.
co-op: So, Alexa and Stefani, for those who don't yet know you, can you tell us a bit about who you are and how SortJoy came to be?
Stefani Herr: Prior to SortJoy, I (Stefani) was a Professional Organizer, and Alexa was an interior designer. Our respective passion for our fields of work eventually brought us together to create SortJoy. We have been friends for years and we love working together to create products that are beautiful and functional for our community.
co-op: Now that the majority of us work from home, organization is key and self care is a top priority. How do you see organization as relating to self care?
Alexa Cohn & Stefani Herr: We love this question because for us Organization is Self-Care. Many people incorporate lifestyle practices to maintain their mental and physical well-being. Things like exercise, eating well, and getting sleep. Organization should be grouped in along with them! Organization not only frees up time and reduces anxiety, but can help you feel more at home in your space. Getting organized is freeing in so many ways. And once you view it as self-care, the process itself can become meditative and relaxing.
co-op: What are some co-op brands you're really into right now?
SH: I’m a big fan of the sweat sets from Mate the Label (so comfy!) and the drool-worthy ceramics from Material Kitchen.
AC: I’m obsessed with Caraway. They’re selling non-toxic cookware and beautiful storage solutions that come with it. It’s brilliant!
co-op: Are there any collaborations you have in the works for Q4?
AC & SH: Not this year, but have some collab goals for 2022! We launched in 2021 and all our focus this year has been on coming out with new foundational products for our line.
co-op: What's the one thing everyone should have on their wishlist this gift giving season? And what's on your list?
AC & SH: Everyone should have our new trays on their list! They’re perfect for establishing a beautiful home for those small belongings you want easily accessible. This is the kind of product that gets people thinking about creating intentional spaces, which can really be a revelation if you’ve never thought about it!
We always have houseplants on our list. You can just never have enough! So pretty much anything from The Sill is a great gift for either of us.
